About Athy Art Group

The Athy Art Group was formed after the success of an art competition and exhibition organised by members of the youth group, Aontas Ogra, in 1970. The exhibition was such as success that, instead of only holding an exhibition every year, the Athy Art Group was formed to organise exhibitions, classes and workshops throughout the year.

An exhibition on the scale of which is organised presently, was not mounted until 1979. It was organised as part of the Athy festival and was held in the ground floor of the local Christian Brothers School (as the children were all on their summer holidays!). Since 1979, the exhibitions have been held in different locations at different times. Up until 2007, the exhibition was held in the local GAA hall, but from 2008 onwards, it will be held in the newly built, Church of Ireland Parish Hall.
